Senior Foot Care in Ponte Vedra, Florida

As people age, many begin to think more about their overall health but often forget about properly caring for their feet. The reality is that if you don’t take care of your feet, you can find yourself immobile, housebound, or even worse. Today Dr. Amanda Bartell and Dr. Andrew Bartell of North Florida Foot & Ankle Center are sharing some information regarding why foot care for the elderly is so important.

Some Common Foot Problems Experienced by Seniors

Conditions that range from hammertoes to bunions and even problems caused by diabetes can become more common as we get older. Some of the most common issues include:

Some of these conditions can affect mobility, and together with other agility issues, they can render a person immobile.

Proper Foot Care for Seniors

As a person begins to age, it can become more challenging for them to take care of their feet, and as their caregiver, you may need to step in and help.

If they complain about a burning sensation in their feet, or you notice any yellowing, you should make an appointment with the podiatrist to make sure these are not complications from diabetes or another serious problem.

After you’ve determined that there are no serious issues, use this checklist to avoid elderly foot problems:

  • Always dry feet completely;
  • Elevate the feet while seated;
  • Apply lotion to the feet daily;
  • Wear shoes and socks that fit properly;
  • Keep toenails trimmed straight across and not too short.

Healthy feet are an important part of being able to enjoy a good quality of life as one gets older. To keep your feet - or those of your loved ones – healthy isn’t difficult. It just takes some maintenance and planning.
