Basic Foot Care You Should Know.

  1. Wash your feet every day in warm soapy water, but don’t soak them, as this might destroy the natural oils. Make sure to dry completely, especially between the toes.
  2. If your skin is dry, apply moisturizing (calendula) cream all over the foot, except for between the toes.
  3. Avoid walking barefooted when possible. You feet will be more prone to injury and infection. While at the beach or wearing sandals be sure to use sunblock on your feet.
  4. Do you have dry or cracked feet? Having a difficulties removing hard skin gently try a pumice stone or AmLactin. It's just an over-the-counter lotion, put it on a couple of times a week, and the calluses will just slough off. If the hard skin is over a bony area or joint or becomes painful, consult a registered podiatrist.
  5. Trim your toe nails regularly, using proper nail clippers. Cut straight across, not too short, and not down at the corners as this can lead to in-growing nails. If you are diabetic, have poor circulation or heart problems you should not treat your own feet because they may be more prone to infection.
  6. Make sure that your shoes fit properly. It’s a good idea to have someone measure you for shoes once in a while, feet often get bigger as you age.
  7. When shopping for new shoes consider making a purchase later in the day when your feet tend to be at their largest, and remember to replace worn out shoes as soon as possible.
  8. Always wear the right shoe for the activity. For example if you are running wear running shoes.
  9. Alternate shoes—don't wear the same pair of shoes every day. Mix it up and give your feet and shoes a rest.
  10. Seek prompt treatment for burns, cuts and breaks in the skin, and for any unusual changes in colour or temperature. This is particularly important if you have diabetes. If your feet hurt, something is wrong!
  11. Do your feet smell? Well, you use antiperspirant on your armpits to keep them from getting stinky, don't you? The same stuff works on your feet. Try the spray kind of antiperspirant for your feet. Also, consider alternating your shoes so they have a chance to dry completely, and wear socks.
